AN EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL HARMONY SEEN AT JAGAT, GORKHA

In Gorkha, Chumnubri 3 Jagat village, a Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist community constructed MANE (the sacred sanctuary of the Nepali Buddhist people).

Though the remaining 95% of Jagat’s population is Hindu, the majority is Christian. By constructing MANE, the people of Jagat have demonstrated how a multireligious community may coexist peacefully. While there are no Buddhist families in Jagat, the MANE has been a part of the community for over a century. Ward leader Ram Kumar Gurung said that residents of Jagat, Bhaluban, and Salleri provided 20 days to the construction of Mane.

When an earthquake struck, the MANE was in the middle of the road. In order to protect it from further harm, locals relocated the MANE slightly from its original location while extending the road. Despite being a Christian, local Gun Bahadur Karki claimed that they renovated MANE because it was a sacred site and part of the cultural legacy of the Bouddhist people. He claims that about two thousand people made contributions towards the construction of the MANE.
